Minorities Affected by Civil and Equal Rights â€Å"The Times They Are A-Changin† is a lyrical poem written by Bob Dylan. â€Å"The Fear of Losing a Culture’ is an auto-biographical essay written by Richard Rodriguez. Both of these literary works have a shared theme of change and social conflict. However, both works were written at different times in history. There are similarities as well as differences between the two works. The shared theme of change for these two works is the change that is taking place in America concerning black Americans and civil rights in â€Å"The Times They Are A-Changin† and Latin Americans and equal rights in â€Å"The Fear of Losing a Culture†. Both authors wrote about the changes that were taking place in America regarding cultures. Cultures have changed throughout the years and different cultures should be embraced by the American public. â€Å"The Times They Are A-Changin’† written by Bob Dylan is reputed as â€Å"the voice of his generation† (Chapman, 2010). In Dylan’s first verse, he is asking for unity among the American people and for others to â€Å"admit that the waters around you have grown† (Dylan, 3-4). â€Å"Then you better start swimmin’ or you’ll sink like a stone,† (Dylan, 8) asks for Americans to stand up against racism and poverty.
